What the Public Listings Say

Every “how much can you make” claim collapses to one formula: hourly rate times billable hours times utilisation. The rate is public. The hours are your choice. Utilisation is the part everyone forgets. So this page collects the rates marketplaces and job boards actually publish for five service lines, picks an anchor rate per line, and multiplies it out for a part-time operator, a full-time operator and a small agency that subcontracts. Two things to pull out of that. The spread inside each line is enormous: a 5x gap between entry and expert on the same n8n page. And the salaried benchmarks are useful floors. An AI developer on $152,203 a year earns about $73 an hour on a 2,080-hour year ($152,203 divided by 2,080). A freelancer charging less than that while carrying their own overhead is mispricing.

Toptal publishes no rates on its FAQ, only a $79 monthly subscription fee charged to clients who proceed with matching. The Zapier experts directory is mostly “book a call”, with one partner listing a 75-minute implementation session at $297.

The Anchor Rates Used in the Math

To turn ranges into revenue you need one number per line. The anchors below are estimates: they sit at or slightly above the middle of the public ranges, because anyone reading a money-first article should be pricing as a competent mid-level operator, not the cheapest listing on the page.

Monthly Revenue Scenarios: Part-Time, Full-Time, Agency-Lite

Three operator profiles, one formula. Hours and utilisation are assumptions, stated here so you can swap in your own.

• Part-time: about 15 hours a week available, 65% billable, rounded to 40 billable hours a month.
• Full-time: 160 hours available, 65% billable, so 104 billable hours a month. The other 56 hours go to selling, scoping, admin and unpaid revisions. If you think 65% is low, you have not tried to sell while delivering.
• Agency-lite: the operator bills 104 hours plus two contractors at 80 billable hours each, 264 hours sold in total. Contractors are paid at the mid band of the Contra n8n page ($30-50/hr, using $35), or higher for technical lines.

That is the “$3K to $15K month” in the title: $3,000 is a part-time chatbot builder, $15,600 is a full-time consultant at a junior-analyst rate. Nothing exotic, no viral case study, just rate times hours.

The agency-lite scenario only makes sense for lines where cheaper labour can deliver most of the work. Consulting does not subcontract well, so it is left out.

• Scoping call, build, testing and handover: 30 hours (estimate; a three-system workflow with error handling and a short client walkthrough).
• Effective rate: $2,500 divided by 30 = $83 per hour, above the $60 anchor because fixed-price work rewards speed.
• Model usage while building and testing: assume 5M input tokens and 1M output tokens on Claude Sonnet 5 at $2 in / $10 out per 1M tokens (Anthropic pricing, checked September 4, 2026): 5 x $2 + 1 x $10 = $20.
• Marketplace fee: Contra charges independents no commission (Contra FAQ text on its hire pages), so $0. Other platforms take a cut; check before you quote.
• Net: $2,500 – $20 = $2,480, or $82.67 per hour.

Chatbots are drifting toward fixed prices. A $700 website chatbot listing and a $50 an hour agent-builder listing on the same page tell you the market has not agreed on a price. Fixed-price builds with a monthly hosting and tuning fee are the safer structure.

Content systems are the floor. Indeed’s $23.70 an hour average for content writers, and Contra’s note that AI-generated words price at $0.01-0.05 per word against $0.10-0.50 for human writers, say it plainly. The money is in building and running the system for a client, not in selling words.

Upwork, Fiverr, ZipRecruiter and Glassdoor pages could not be read directly during this check because they served bot challenges. Upwork ranges therefore come from two dated secondary articles that cite Upwork’s own hiring pages, both labelled secondary in the table. If those platforms are your main channel, open their category pages yourself before quoting.

What this page cannot tell you: how fast you reach 104 billable hours, and how much of your rate survives platform fees and taxes where you live. Both matter more than any hourly rate.
